We, the Anglos and the Vietnamese, the people of God unite under the Church of St. Peter-Vietnamese Catholic Community of the Diocese of Des Moines, Iowa, guided by the Holy Spirit and our devotion to serve God. We strive to minimize the differences between cultures by working together through prayer, worship and praise to God; and to help everyone to witness the Gospel values of love, forgiveness, justice through service to all.

Chúng tôi, những người Mỹ và Việt, những người con của Chúa, hiệp nhất dưới ngôi Thánh Đường Thánh Phêrô-Cộng Đồng Công Giáo Việt Nam, thuộc giáo phận Des Moines, Iowa, dưới sự hướng dẫn của Chúa Thánh Thần cùng với lòng thành tâm phụng sự Chúa. Chúng tôi cố gắng làm giảm đi sự khác biệt giữa những tập tục, văn hóa qua việc cùng nhau cầu nguyện, thờ phượng, suy tôn Chúa; và giúp mọi người sống làm chứng cho những giá trị Tin Mừng của Chúa bằng đời sống yêu thương tha thứ, công bằng, bác ái qua việc phục vụ mọi người.

HISTORY - Lịch Sử

St. Peter Church established in 1915 as a branch of the former Visitation Parish, Visitation to be known as the north parish and St. Peter’s to be known as the south parish. In 2004, Visitation and St. Peter parishes merged to create Our Lady of the Americas and retained both churches as worship centers. For good pastoral care and good financial stewardship, a planning committee suggested consolidating to one worship site. After considered all available options, the committee decided to keep the Visitation Worship Center and to close St. Peter Worship Center.

The Vietnamese Catholics who settled in Des Moines area around late 1970s and other Vietnamese Catholics who moved to Des Moines in recent years formed the Vietnamese Catholic Community. The Community did not have enough resources and powers to establish a new parish, a place for the members to get together for worship in Vietnamese. The members mainly gathered at the Basilica of St. John and St. Ambrose Cathedral. Each year the Community was getting bigger. There was a need for a place to gather for worship and cultural events.

Creating St. Peter Parish is an excellent idea of matching resources with needs. “We had on one hand the availability of the St. Peter Worship Center, and on the other hand a need in the Vietnamese community for a place for parish worship and cultural events. Bringing the Vietnamese community together at St. Peter is a good move in terms of stewardship and using our resources wisely, and in terms of good pastoral care for our people. The local Catholic Vietnamese community members need to be able to regularly celebrate Mass and have access to sacrament of reconciliation, sacrament of the sick and other sacraments in their native language,” said Bishop Pates.

On the weekend of October 4-5, 2008, Bishop Richard Pates announced at all Masses at Our Lady of the Americas the consolidation of worship centers from two to one, and the creation of St. Peter Vietnamese Catholic Community. Bishop Richard Pates also assigned a Vietmanese native and diocesan priest Father Ly Chu as administrator and would be responsible for the pastoral needs of the new parish. The new St. Peter Parish offered services and pastoral care started on Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008, the beginning of the Catholic Church’s liturgical year, and became the 83^rd parish in the diocese.

Nhà thờ St. Peter thành lập vào năm 1915 như là một chi nhánh của Xứ Đạo Visitation, Visitation được xem là như xứ đạo ở hướng bắc và St. Peter được xem là xứ đạo ở hướng nam. Vào năm 2004, Visitation và. St. Peter đã hợp lại thành Our Lady of the Americas và giữ cả hai nhà thờ làm những trung tâm thờ phụng. Để tiện cho việc mục vụ và quản lý tài chính tốt hơn, ủy ban kế hoạch đề nghị nhập hai trung tâm thờ phụng thành một. Sau khi xem xét tất cả mọi khía cạnh, ủy ban quyết định giữ Trung Tâm Thờ Phụng ở Visitation và đóng cửa Trung Tâm Thờ Phụng ở St. Peter.

Những người Công Giáo Việt Nam định cư ở thành phố Des Moines vào khoảng cuối thập niên 1970s cùng với những người Công Giáo khác đến định cư ở Des Moines vào những năm gần đây đã lập nên một Cộng Đồng Công Giáo Việt Nam. Cộng Đồng vẫn chưa có đủ điều kiện và khả năng để thành lập một giáo xứ riêng, một nơi để các thành viên có thể được cùng nhau tôn thờ Chúa dùng ngôn ngữ Việt. Các thành viên chủ yếu là tập hợp tại hai nhà thờ đó là Basilica of St John và St Ambrose Cathedral. Mỗi năm Cộng Đồng mỗi lớn mạnh. Cộng Đồng cần phải có một nơi để tập hợp cho các sự kiện văn hóa và tôn thờ.

Lập Giáo Xứ Thánh Phêrô là một ý tưởng tuyệt vời vì việc này sẽ làm cho nguồn vật chất phù hợp với nhu cầu. Theo lời của Đức Cha Pates, "Chúng ta đang có trong tay một Nhà Thờ Thánh Phêrô, và mặt khác Cộng Đồng Việt Nam cần một nơi để tôn thờ phụng Chúa và các tổ chức văn hóa riêng. Đem Cộng Đồng Việt Nam lại với nhau tại St Peter là rất tốt trong điều kiện quản lý và sử dụng nguồn tài nguyên của chúng ta một cách khôn ngoan, và tạo điều kiện tốt về việc mục vụ và chăm sóc cho giáo dân. Các thành viên của Cộng Đồng Việt Nam cần có khả năng thường xuyên tổ chức Lễ và có thể lãnh nhận bí tích giải tội, bí tích sức dầu bệnh nhân và các bí tích khác bằng ngôn ngữ bản xứ."
